Steven P. Kragenbrink, CVA

Community Programs Director

Steve Kragenbrink, who joined Woods Humane Society in April of 2006, is the coordinator for both our Volunteer Corps and all of our shelter’s Community Outreach Programs. Over the past year, Mr. Kragenbrink has worked closely with our Director of Operations in the development of our volunteer program and the daily enrichment of the animals currently calling our shelter home. Mr. Kragenbrink has also spearheaded many of our shelter’s advertising and fundraising campaigns along with the establishment of our Humane Education Program. He is the voice of our shelter throughout the community and can be seen and heard regularly, every Friday, on our Weekly Media Run. (Please see our Media Pawtner Page for stations and air times)

Mr. Kragenbrink moved to the Central Coast in August of 2002 from Orange County, CA. His previous experience took him from managing the kitchen staff at the Warfield and Fillmore concert theaters, running his own promotions company, and many other Human Resource Management positions. He graduated from Cuesta College in June of 2006 with an emphasis in Graphic Design/Communications. Mr. Kragenbrink currently enjoys living in Los Osos with his beautiful wife Julie, daughter Emma, baby Noah, two Boxers named Sammie & Rocky, and a Tabby cat named Gandalf.

Mr. Kragenbrink’s main goals are: To make Woods Humane Society synonymous with adopting a pet and to increase public awareness of animal overpopulation through Humane Education.

Leigh Ann Harms

Operations Director

Working with her diligent team, Leigh Ann Harms, is responsible for ensuring the shelter runs smoothly day-to-day and everyone from the customers to the animals receive the best possible care our resources permit.

While earning her Associate of Applied Science Degree in Animal Health Technology Leigh Ann performed a 3 month internship at North Carolina Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Raleigh, North Carolina. After receiving extensive training in all areas of the hospital she returned to her hometown of Lincoln, Nebraska and began working for The Capital Humane Society.

In April of 2000 she joined us at Woods Humane Society. With over 9 years of shelter experience she thrives on the day to day challenges and gratification of working and maintaining an innovative and progressive facility.

Malcolm Riordan, DVM.

Staff Veterinarian

Woods Humane Society’s staff veterinarian is Malcolm Riordan, DVM. Dr. Riordan graduated from U.C. Davis School of Veterinary Medicine in 1982. He worked as a practicing veterinarian in Santa Barbara for 17 years, and then relocated to the Central Coast in 2000. He worked at Edna Valley Veterinary Clinic for five years before becoming the first veterinarian to be hired on full time by Woods Humane Society in 2005.

Dr. Riordan describes himself as “The Doc of the Orphanage” and has found the task of overseeing the health of every animal that enters our doors to be more demanding yet more rewarding than he ever could imagine. Dr. Riordan has dedicated himself to insuring that every patient he cares for at Woods receives premier care for the duration of their stay with us. Dr. Riordan continues to be instrumental in the development of our shelter’s every growing Spay & Neuter programs. He is currently working alongside Dr. Steve Jefferson, DVM (who is also employed by Woods) in our new Spay/Neuter Suite as the number of surgeries we perform now exceeds 1,000 annually. In his spare time, he enjoys being an amateur photographer and has recently started working with the shelter staff to photograph the current guests of Woods Humane Society.

Favorite Quote: “Societies will be judged by the way they treat the unfortunate among them”.
