Animal Caregiver/ Adoption Counselor P/T

Woods Humane Society is searching for our next great team member at our beautiful San Luis Obispo shelter. We’re looking to fill an Animal Caregiver/Adoption Counselor position, a part-time (up to 29 hours) schedule that includes weekdays, weekends with at least one or two holidays per year. Morning and afternoon shifts available.

JOB TITLE:  Part Time Animal Caregiver/Adoption Counselor (up to 29 hours) need to be available weekdays and weekends. (Morning and Afternoon availability). Work at least one or two holiday days a year

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

Animal Caregivers are responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of the shelter and a safe and disease free environment for all animals; provide exceptional customer service to all potential adopters; assess and communicate animal behavior and provide basic medical care when needed.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A genuine interest in animals and their well being
  • A valid California Driver's License

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

Continuous exposure to infectious organisms, animal waste, allergens, chemical materials requiring OSHA Material Safety Data Sheets, high noise, sharp objects, potential hostile persons and/or dangerous and fractious animals, including the risk of animal bites and scratches.

 

SCHEDULE: (subject to change)

Willingness to work on weekends and a minimum of three holidays per year.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to control large dogs and fractious cats
  • Work with a variety of cleaning agents
  • Work in an environment with daily changes in climate
  • Regularly required to use hands, fingers, voice and hearing
  • Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel or crouch
  • Specific vision abilities required are close vision, distant vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to focus
  • The ability to lift and carry fifty pounds for 100 feet

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Kennel and Cattery Areas

  • Perform the daily cleaning routines of the animal living quarters in accordance with WHS policies and procedures in an efficient and effective manner
  • Assure animals are cared for regarding food, water, daily exercise, and living conditions
  • Monitor the health of animals and properly notify vet staff of any possible health problems
  • Participate with behavior and kennel enrichment programs including assisting with training and socialization programs
  • Ensure all daily tasks are completed
  • Participate in the training of new employees

Customer Service

  •  Ensure the general public is assisted in a helpful, professional, polite, courteous, and timely manner; providing a high level of personalized customer service
  • Accurately field questions regarding the organization's services and programs
  • Provide specific information to potential adopters regarding temperament, behavior, age and breed type characteristics of adoptable animals
  • Facilitate meetings between potential adopters and the animals with which they have interest
  • Facilitate meetings between WHS animals and the animals of potential adopters
  • Always be unbiased and non-judgmental in one’s interactions with the public
  • Computer skills and frequent use of shelter buddy program

Animal Behavior

  • Observe and assist in conducting behavior assessments on incoming animals (handling and observing), to include presenting opinions on approval or denial into the adoption program
  • Work under the supervision of the trainer on staff
  • Be able to discern between good interactions and questionable interactions with WHS animals and the animals of potential adopters, seeking the assistance of the Manager, Supervisor or Animal Care Team Leader if the interaction is questionable or if there are any concerns
  • Conduct dog-to-dog introductions with WHS dogs, seeking the assistance of the Manager, Supervisor, Animal Care Team, or Behavior and Training team if the interaction is questionable or if there are any concerns

 Woods Humane Society General

  • Maintain a neat and well-groomed personal appearance
  • Assist in maintaining overall facility cleanliness, including working on the daily check off sheet as well as any assigned cleaning tasks
  • Attend quarterly all staff meetings
  • Attend all Animal Care staff meetings
  • Attend trainings and utilize training material
  • Abide by all policies
  • Carry out other duties as assigned by the Adoption program manager and/or an Animal care supervisor
